A Study of the antimicrobial effect of the Ornidazole (Tiberal^(¢ç)) on anaerobic infection in surgical field

Abstract
The infectious complications after the elective colorectal surgery and emergency surgery for int aabdominal infection are mainly caused by anaerobic organism from the intestine. The importance o antimicrobial agent for anaerobic infection has been recognized-recently.
This study was aimed at evaluating the antimicrobial effect of the Ornidazole (Tiberal¢ç) for preve tion of infectious complication due to anaerobic organism in elective colorectal surgery and emergency sur. ery for intrabdominal infection which was clinically suggested anaerobic infection during the period be een July, 1987 and Dec., 1987 at Chungnam National University Hospital. .
Postoperative infectious complication was developed in 1(5%) out of 20 patients received elective colorectal surgery and in 3(14%) out of 22 patients received¢¥ emergency surgery for intraadominal infect on.
Anaerobic infections did not developed in any of Ornidazole (Tiberal¢ç) treated patients.
Adverse effects of Ornidazole were not developed in this study.
With the very low success rate of anaerobic culture, the therapeutic effect of the Ornidazole for the anaerobic infection could not be confirmed bacteriologically, but the therapeutic effect of this drug c o uld be observed clinically.
